What Customers Say About Sony WM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV/Weather Tuning:

I'm someone who is "So 20th Century" when it comes to my audio media. This is especially nice, considering with other models, you don't know when your batteries are low (or dead) until it's too late.THE BAD:*It does not come with a clip that you can attach to your belt or fanny pack. Less than a year after I started using the Walkman, the door latch housing the battery compartment broke. I also have a huge collection of cassettes, many of which are not available in CD format, and for which I do not have the equipment to convert to either CD or MP3 format. I would have thrown it out had it not been for the good sound quality. I bought this model a few years ago for a reasonably good price, back when they were phasing out portable cassette players for MP3 players. I've always preferred the "natural" sounds of LP's and CD's as opposed to the more tinny sounds of MP3's. So, you either have to buy a separate clip for the unit to fit into, or carry it in your hand when you walk.THE UGLY:*The plastic in the case housing the player is made out of cheap material.

Sound-wise, this has to be one of the best portable cassette players I've ever had, but it's not been without its share of problems. The rundown:THE GOOD:*Excellent sound quality.*Also includes AM/FM radio and weather satellite station.*Only requires one AA battery to operate (as opposed to at least 2 for other similar players), and can last a long time with that same battery.*Easy-to-read LCD digital display.*Battery indicator warning light. Because it was a spring latch, the door no longer stays closed on its own. Instead, I've had to either rubber-band or scotch-tape the door to keep it closed and the battery from popping out.All that being said - if you're still looking for a cassette Walkman good sound and can overlook the very obvious flaws - this would be the one to get.

I was looking for a replacement in a smaller size. I can't hear the sound on this Sony at all at Staples Center. I have a very old larger Sony Walkman that I have been using at the Lakers games to listen to the radio broadcast of the game while I'm watching and it works great. This was not a good purchase. It works okay at home.

I'll make this quick and simple: I've purchased 3 of these products (twice for my father and one for my mother) and 2 out of 3 have broken down within its first year of purchase. Is that worth $50+. No.Also, I have a had hard time figuring out how to tune this thing. Walkman should be made very user-friendly. My parents have had a hard time with it and as did I.

I would strongly advise against paying 90$+ for this machine because it is the lower tier and doesn't sound great and you can find it for under half the price anywhere else. I have noticed that Sony had two tiers of walkman when they were still producing them; a high-end one (including, for example, the Sony WM FS566) and a low-end one (including, for example, the Sony EX190). If you have had good experience with their lower-tier, you could buy this, but as of 04/11/09 Frys has it for 29.99 and Jandr for 34.95 (NOT refurbs). The national blue- and- yellow place has this product for 39.99 -- and none of these are refurbs or anything. EDIT: Sony has it for $29.99 as of 04/12/09

There is nothing like an inexpensive, good-time.And that is what this Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV/Weather Tuning gives. But careful with that apparatus. One drop to the floor or ground and it's functionality could be gone. But you are much more sensitive than I. much more careful too.Clutsy me. The last model of this make which I had, I dropped and POP went the door to the battery compartment: broken. So let this review sit like a pancake on your plate: use with care least you get fat hubris and drop your model like I dropped mine. The Sony WM-FX290 is an inexpensive buy but sensitive if you are mean.Another way of saying this is, is: The unit is economical, but if you drop it, it won't "cheep."
